How The Story Unfolds...

I always loved  going to the South Street Seaport in Manhattan, Mystic Seaport in Conn, and Cold Spring Harbor with my parents when I was younger. My mom took us often to many of the historical spots that dot the East Coast and made us pretend we lived there. What kind of food would we eat, where would we get it? How would we travel? Why is location important? We drove down the east coast to Florida every year, and she would make us pretend to be soldiers  in the Civil War- How did it make us feel fighting another one our countrymen? Let's say we were brothers with opposing viewpoints? Just last week, she went with my kids and I to the Old Bethpage Restoration and we ate pretzels and birch beer in the 300 year old tavern. She made my children smell the smokey wood scent of the aged fireplace, walk in a corn maze, play a game of checkers on a cracker barrel.  We walked through the open air market and discussed what life would be like to live in a town like this in the 19th century. So, writing about life in older centuries is based on a lifetime of exercises into trips of imagination. We were not limited to the East Coast, we have been pioneers as well as Native Americans, and on vacations to Europe, we have thought about being anything from Vikings to Crusaders, Religious Reformists to serfs.  A simple game of placing myself into what a person was feeling during the time I choose to investigate, creates both the character and the story. When I write, I close my eyes, and rehash the long ago questions she made us ponder, and sure enough, personalities and situations begin to take shape, and the story unfolds.
